Having upset most of his team by electing to bowl first, Lodway skipper Stephen Edmonds did not see the early wickets he had hoped for, with the first wicket not falling until the 10th over as Steve Popham found Matty Crutchley at leg gully from the bowling of Duncan Hebblethwaite for 31. Hebblethwaite (2-52) struck again shortly after when he bowled Ewan Smith, and Hebblethwaite had a hand in the third wicket at the end of his 8-over spell as he caught CPS captain James Hyden off the bowling of young Josh Coley (1-21) to leave CPS 128-3. Although brother and sister Culverhouse Hamish (0-37) and Mathilda (0-41) both bowled impressively, 4th-wicket pairing Rich Shaw and Simon Freegard were quick to attack, with Freegard especially unwilling to spare the youngsters' figures, and it was left to more experienced heads to stem the runs, with Nick Rice bowling Shaw for a 78-ball 82 to claim his 100th play-cricket wicket for Lodway. Eventually, Rice (2-28 from 7) was also able to end Freegard's brutality, which broke almost as many neighbours’ windows as it did teenaged bowlers’ spirits, as Coley took a nerveless catch to send him back for 83 from 43 (with 9x4 and 6x6), and Ben Culverhouse (1-43) took the last wicket of the innings thanks to a catch from Charlie Bell, as CPS took tea at 285-6 with Lodway having used 8 bowlers who all stuck to their task admirably.
In reply, the Lodway opening pair of Fraser Dawe and Matty Crutchley were quick to punish the more experienced CPS bowlers, with the century partnership being brought up in the 13th over and both batsmen bringing up their half-centuries, but Dawe could only reach 58 before being stumped by Freegard off leg-spinner Daz Armoogum in the 15th over. Crutchley was the next to fall, caught by a tumbling Popham off Armoogum (2-63) for 59, and it was Harrison Rex's turn to take up the mantle, in partnership with Rice, as the pair took Lodway to 178-2 in the 24, with the required run rate down to manageable proportions. However, at this point the pendulum swung significantly in CPS' favour, as young off-spinner Jamie Shaw had Rex loft to square leg to fall for 42 from 37 before bowling Charlie Bell the very next ball. With Sanjay Mata coming into his own at the other end, Lodway's 178-2 had become 188-7 in no time, and the game appeared up, even with Edmonds now in belligerently confident mood in the middle. Shaw (3-47) and Mata (4-18) each dismissed a Culverhouse before their spells were done, leaving last pair Edmonds and Hebblethwaite with 76 required from 45 balls. Although both found boundaries in a 31-ball partnership of 34, Edmonds was bowled by Smith (1-48) for 39 (28) as the rate increased, leaving Hebblethwaite undefeated on 11, as Lodway were dismissed for 244 in the 38th over, as the sun began to set behind the clubhouse.
