2s Maintain Promotion Push

Nick Rice14 Aug - 19:57

Written by Dean Wyatt

The 2s made it four wins in a row to keep their promotion hopes alive against Wrington on a hot day at Ham Green. Veteran skipper Dicer again got the better of his opposite number at the toss and chose to make first use of a good looking batting wicket.

Deano and Dawsey got off to a positive start, scoring four boundaries each and ticking along at over 5 an over. They couldn't repeat last weeks massive partnership however, and both were frustrated to be dismissed when looking poised for a good score. When Rimon joined them back in the pavilion making it 49-3, there was a sense that a good opportunity could be wasted. Williamson and Parkhouse batted positively to add 56 before Parkhouse was caught for an enterprising 31 (105-4). Williamson was next to go for an excellent 46 (139-5), and again it felt as though the consistent loss of wickets might undermine the chance of putting real pressure on Wrington. Harris, enjoying his new home in the middle order, batted fluently in partnership with Shoppers, who showed uncharacteristic discipline as the pair added 51. Harris fell for 39 and was soon followed by Abs and Imran (222-8). Skipper Dice joined Shoppers and they added some late impetus with a flurry of boundaries, before Shoppers fell in the last over for an impressive 45 when he looked set for a very well deserved 50. Barker and Dice saw the innings through to 267. A good team effort with 7 batters getting to 19, but nobody passing 46.

Wrington started cautiously and Williamson and Imran bowled well without reward. Dawe and Barker came in to the attack and bowled steadily but also without success. The Wrington skipper eventually started playing some shots, and with veteran run machine Clements at the other end they went to drinks well placed needing around 160 off 20 overs with all 10 wickets in hand. A couple of chances had gone down and that added to the frustration, which reached a crescendo when Williamson was given about 6 different instructions as he completed a piece of fielding on the boundary. Skipper Dice calmed his troops at the drinks break over a soothing glass of squash, and Rimon and Abs gained control of the run rate after the break. Abs was first to strike, getting the Wrington captain stumped by Dicer to end an opening partnership of 124. Soon after Rimon bowled the number 3 and it felt as though the momentum had fully shifted and it was now a case of how many bowling points could be gained. When a smart bit of fielding from Harris (a considerably better throw from the apprentice than an earlier effort from the master that nearly killed Shoppers!) ran out Clements for 54, Wrington's last hope had gone. Rimon picked up a second wicket but a frustrating partnership followed. Williamson came back and picked up a deserved wicket. Chances and half chances came and went but Lodway couldn't add to their 5 wickets. Missing the final point specialist, George Hardwell, skipper Dice gave himself one last roll by turning to another George H. He created chances but without reward as a chance went down in the deep and a caught and bowled was missed as the ball vanished in to the setting sun.

Not the 20 points we all hoped for, but still top of the league with an enormous clash at Cleeve to look forward to next week.
