1st WIN at home to Keynsham!

Matty Crutchley10 Jul - 12:45

Lodway 1st XI continued their strong start to the season at a sun-drenched but blustery Ham Green on Saturday, as they defeated Keynsham 2nd XI by 58 runs to secure maximum points and extend their lead at the top of Division 1. Written by Stephen Edmonds.

Having been inserted, last week's unbeaten opening partnership was less impressive for Lodway, with Caolan Pearce falling to the erratic Syd Arblaster (1-27) for 4 to bring Tobias Rice to the crease to join Adam Robson, and the pair combined for 36 runs before Rice was dismissed for 15 off a leading edge from Ish Randika. Ben Stitfall was the next to fall in a similar fashion for 18, and, when Robson was out for 47 to Randika (3-37) shortly after Tom Marsh was caught and bowled by Simon Knowles (1-28) for 2, Lodway were 114-5 at the start of the 21st over and in danger of squandering their good start to both this innings and the season as a whole. With Ryan Rice again struggling for runs before being bowled by Eddie Johnson (1-39) for 3, Lodway found themselves 6 down in the 23rd over as Stephen Edmonds joined Alfie Rendell, and the pair consolidated the innings before taking a liking to the pace that Johnson offered, especially when Rendell exchanged Edmonds' spare cap for Robson's helmet, even while continuing to wear Edmonds' spare boots. Rendell's most impressive shot was one that welcomed the new neighbours to the village by smashing a roof tile, as the partnership grew to 61 in 12 overs before Edmonds found Ian Fiebelkorn at long-off off Ben Whittington to leave the stage for 14. Rendell brought up his fine half-century soon after, before being run out by his captain, Joe Crutchley, for 54, and it was left to the Crutchley brothers to bring up the 200, with Matty playing the lead hand with 19 from 10 balls before falling to a fine catch by Oliver Bell at deep square leg off Whittington (2-28). Joe Crutchley (4*) was not done with the run outs, however, as the final wicket fell at the bowler's end from a firmly hit drive that was deflected onto the stumps to leave Tom Metcalfe-Smith (4) short of his ground and Lodway all out in the last over.

In reply, Keynsham started strongly against the new-ball pairing of Tobias Rice and Stitfall, with Bell racing to 22 in the 6th over before being well caught by Ryan Rice in the gully off Stitfall. Stitfall (2-32) then dismissed other opener, Tom Kennedy, LBW for 9, before Metcalfe-Smith, replacing Rice due to a strong headwind from the River End, struck in both the 11th and 13th overs, first pinning Fiebelkorn for 16 before bowling Johnson (9) to reduce the visitors to 67-4. The next passage of play was firmly Lodway's, with Metcalfe-Smith (2-14 from 8) and Crutchley J (0-21 from 8) giving Knowles and Arblaster little margin for error and opportunity to score. However, as the 5th wicket partnership approached the last 10 overs, Lodway started to worry about securing maximum bowling points, but the introduction of Rice T (3-49) from the Anchor End paid dividends, as he bowled Knowles for 26 (from 61), before bouncing out both Whittington (0) and Arblaster (19 from 53) in his next over; both caught by Crutchley J at midwicket, as Keynsham slumped to 119-7. Although Joe Jackson (15) and wayward bowling briefly threatened to get Keynsham close to Lodway's target, Matty Crutchley was able to wrap up the innings with 3-37, as Keynsham were finally dismissed for 161 in the 37th over.

Lodway now travel to the Brownsword Ground on Saturday to face 3rd-placed Bath 3rds, knowing that a victory will go a long way to knocking their illustrious rivals out of the title race.
